how does a birth doula support me and my family?

A doula starts working with you during your pregnancy, offering information and resources to help you understand all of your options and prepare for your birth. During labor, your doula offers different levels of support - physical, emotional, educational - and protects your preferences. Physical and emotional support help you feel safe, protected, and ease the intensity of labor. The doula explains what is happening during labor and helps you understand the different medical interventions. All information is evidence based and up to date . It also suggests different comfort measures, changing positions, relaxation techniques, etc. that help throughout all stages of labor and delivery

how do you work with partners and family members?

The presence of a doula complements and strengthens the role of your main support person, if there is one. During the prenatal visits, I work with your partner preparing him/her to be the best support possible. I take care of your support person during labor so that she or he remains energetic and confident.  Studies show that partners are more actively involved during labor when a doula is present. Your partner and your family bring a loving emotional connection and intimate knowledge of you. Combined with the professional experience of your doula, your birth team is your best support system.

how can you support me if I am planning on getting pain medication or if I have an scheduled cesarean birth?

The doula support is tailored to the person preferences and the very specific needs of each pregnancy and birth. The benefits of having a doula are not limited to a certain form of delivery; for each option, I prepare you with information and give you tools for all the possible scenarios. I walk you through the recovery process as well, so you can have the best possible experience.

how can you help me as a lactation counselor?

As a CLC I am trained to help with a wide variety of breastfeeding challenges. Some common issues include latching, breastfeeding holds, milk supply, and plugged ducts. I can also help you develop a plan for pumping and returning to work.

If I see any medical issue like tongue tie or signs of mastitis, I will refer you to an IBCL or a doctor.
